Formerly a pub with a negative reputation, the Charter was converted into a church back in December 2018. Situated on Tollcross Rd, between Parkhead and Tollcross, the Charter now operates as a café and community space as well as hosting a growing church community. Our services start at 10.30am on Sunday mornings and are followed by tea and coffee. On the first Sunday of every month, we have a light meal together afterwards. All are so welcome!
Who we are
The old Charter Bar was purchased by Parkhead Nazarene in 2018 in order to reach out into a new community, particularly the areas of Lilybank, Auchenshuggle and Tollcross. After a long period of prayer, community audit and planning, the team came up with a very simple mission statement that describes how we want to function as a church community in the area. We call this “Our Charter”:
Our Charter
We envision that the Charter will be a place that is very much at the heart of the community:
- A place of welcome and peace for people of all ages and backgrounds.
- A place where people can discover Jesus.
- A place where people gather and grow together through worship and service.
Our Values
Service
As a church we remind ourselves that “Jesus came not to be served but to serve”. Whether it is putting out chairs on a Sunday morning or leading in one of our weekly programmes, we encourage people to follow the way of Jesus and get involved in serving.
Justice
The theme of justice comes up time and time again in the Bible, often alongside the idea that God has a deep concern for those who are poor and marginalised. We have found that this is a particularly important word for us as we serve in the East End of Glasgow.
Hospitality
Sitting round a table and sharing a meal with others was something that Jesus did so often, whether with his disciples, or with people that the rest of society thought were “sinners”. For this reason, you’ll find that welcome and hospitality are key features of all that we do as a church.
Authenticity
We want to be a church who are real about the struggles and troubles we face. God desires that we “share one another’s burdens” (Gal 6: 2, NLT) and so we encourage all of our people to be open and honest about the sin and brokenness that we experience in this life, both with each other and also with God.
We are part of the Church of the Nazarene, a church denomination which currently works in over 160 countries across the world. If you’d like to find out more about our Church, its beliefs or history then please click here: https://www.nazarene.org/
What's On
One of the main things we have given attention to at the Charter is creating a warm and welcoming café space for the local community. Open 3 times a week and operating a “have what you want, give what you can” policy, our café aims to be accessible to all. Why not pop in and say hello?
